Sentiment as the main image

Sentiment
It is May and Mother’s Day in the US is coming up so I chose to make a mother’s day card for the new challenge over at Creative card Crew. We are sponsored by Simon Says Stamp so this is your chance to win a gift card at a very well stocked online store :-)
simonsaysstamp The challenge this time is to use a sentiment as the main image. I found a saying about mothers after a quick online search. The sentiment was written using my new fountain pen (Pilot Namiki Falcon) with a flexible tip. I was able to make the words look similar to Copperplate calligraphy script, but it is not quite there. It is best to use proper nib and ink. The background text says Love and Mother (in English and Norwegian) and the words were written in clothesline lettering. This is a fun and quick way to write decoratively. It looks as if the letters have been hung on a clothesline.
I hope you like our new challenge and join us!

Cobweb heart

IMG_1703 IMG_1702

Last weekend on our monthly meeting in the Houston Calligraphy Guild we learnt how to make this card. We were told that it is one of Martha Stewart’s design, but I have not yet searched online to find the source.

You print a specific pattern on the backside of the paper and cut along the printed lines with a sharp hobby knife. It takes some patience, but the result was fun!

Brush markers

 IMG_1691

I recently learnt that the Copic markers work very well for brush lettering as well as for coloring stamps. Both of these were made by layering three colors and adding small gold lines at the top of the letters.

Bungalow lettering

I am completely hooked on this lettering style. It is called bungalow. The stamp is from Sarah Key and was colored using Copic markers.

A birthday card only with writing and water color!

My cards usually have layers of paper on them. This card was made the day I bought a book about lettering. This was fun.

Decorative edge

IMG_1536 IMG_1537 IMG_1538 IMG_1536_text

Father’s day is coming up in Norway and here is a card for my father. He usually does not visit my blog, so hopefully he won’t see it ahead of time. ;-)  I am publishing it already now in order to contribute to the Kazan's sketch 62 challenge. The challenge was to make a card with a decorative edge.

The decorative edge was cut using a Cricut cartridge on Core’dinations cardstock. A vertical border was dry embossed. Then the cardstock was sanded to show more of the blue core of the paper.

The sentiments was written with a brush marker and outlined in black. ‘Pappa’ means ‘daddy’ in Norwegian. The sentiment inside the card says ‘Have a great father’s day. Hugs, your daughter’. :-)

Valentine 2010 – Post 1

IMG_1124

I love these papers. The Valentine collection at Archiver’s was great 2010!

IMG_1116

On this card I used the clothesline lettering that I discussed in this post.

IMG_1122

The dark grey cardstock is from Core’dinations. Small flowers were embossed on it. The embossed area and the edges were sanded.

The hearts were also embossed using the Sizzix texture boutique.

Hmmm… Seems like my blog contains free advertisements.

Clothesline lettering

All you need to create this kind of lettering is to draw two parallel lines (your clothesline) and draw playful letters. You can color the gaps between the letters. It is a good idea to draw it all with a pencil and finish it with a thin marker afterwards. Also, note that the clothesline is drawn between letters and not within letters.

The two examples below are from envelopes. (The street names and numbers have been removed for anonymity.)

Lettering styles

Two quick and easy lettering styles for cards and envelopes. My secret pal this summer at the Houston Calligraphy guild taught me these. You don’t need to be steady on your hand or accurate to produce good results. I find that the road to success consist of two parallel lines to ensure equal letter height. Apart from that: Scribble away!
